When I bought my Blackberry, I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter.
I signed up, under duress, for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, my 13 grand kids and 2 great- grand-kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.
My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation.
I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.
The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Bluetooth [it's red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife and everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. I had to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud.
I mean, the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lating." You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then, if I made a right turn instead. Well, it was not a good relationship...
When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and, while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.
To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven't figured out how I lose three phones all at once and have to run around digging under chair cushions, checking bathrooms, and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings.
The world is just getting too complex for me.
They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store.
You would think they could settle on something themselves, but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" Every time I check out, just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them with me.
Now I toss it back to them.
When they ask me, "Paper or plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look.
I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, No, but I do fart a lot."
P.S. I know some of you are not over 70. I sent it to you to allow you to forward it to those who are. I figured your sense of humour could handle it....
We senior citizens don't need any more gadgets. The TV remote and the garage door remote are about all we can handle.

On this 49th Earth Day, the population of our country has passed 327 million . . . with no upper limit in sight. This was definitely not the environmental dream at the first Earth Day in 1970 when teach-ins across the nation stressed that the nation was unable to responsibly handle even the 200-million population at that time. The Father of Earth Day, Sen. Gaylord Nelson, expressed the dominant hope that U.S. population would never exceed 250 million. And that hopeful vision likely would have come true if Congress had not insisted on greatly increasing the annual flow of immigration.
ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS DEPENDED ON STABILIZED POPULATION
Like other Earth Day Dreamers in the 1960s and 1970s, Sen. Nelson (D-Wis.) was clear that the United States could never meet its environmental goals without stabilizing its population. (A presidential commission in 1973 and another one in the 1990s came to the same conclusion.) If Congress had left annual immigration at around 300,000, the conservation laws that Sen. Nelson helped pass in the first Earth Day period likely would have resulted in the nation meeting most of those 1970-era environmental goals by now, aided in large part by a population that would be leveling off at around 250 million. Instead, the country is struggling to slow the environmental degradation that comes from having to provide the housing, roads, workplaces, food, and waste disposal not just for the 250 million but for nearly 80 million residents above that. NumbersUSA's many sprawl studies have calculated the millions of acres of farmland and natural habitat destroyed to handle the extra population forced by one Congress after another.
Our nationwide ad campaign portrays the numbers behind this environmental tragedy in 30 seconds. It notes that annual immigration in the 1950s was around 250,000 but was double that in the 1980s and now is more than one million a year. The ad ends by pointing out that polls find most Americans wanting immigration cut by a lot but that Congress shows no sign of listening, content in its apparent ignorance or indifference to the environmental consequences.
MY 1994 BOOK SADLY STILL ACCURATE I conveyed my sadness about the betrayal of the Earth Day Dreamers in the Introduction for "Re-Charting America's Future," the book I wrote for high school debate teams whose national topic in the 1994-95 year was immigration: But Congress all the while has been flooding the nation with unprecedented waves of foreign workers and their relatives. U.S population growth has surged.
Now . . . Americans are faced with a heartbreaking conclusion: Washington has canceled out much of the environmental and social benefits that their choice of small families could have provided.
In effect, Congress has re-charted the future that Americans thought they were creating. Since 1972, American women have averaged about two children each, a rate that produces no long-term population expansion. But Congress has used immigration to drive population growth higher than it was during the Baby Boom.
STILL REPRESENTING THE 1970 EARTH DAY DREAMERS NumbersUSA continues to keep that 1970 dream alive. We once again have a large exhibit at the Texas Earth Day Expo in Dallas, the world's largest Earth Day exhibition, reminding people of the original vision and of what and who is still sabotaging it. Many of our staff are there right now, illustrating the magnitude of the population growth forced by Congress and of the specific loss of farmland and habitat near Texas cities NumbersUSA is a single-issue organization that works on the stabilization issue only in terms of whether immigration policy allows or prevents stabilization from happening. But, a recent poll, conducted by Harris on behalf of Envoy, a Chicago-based body shop dedicated to expansive immigration policies, revealed that tech companies don't need foreign-born workers as much as they've led the public to believe.
Until business interests weighed in, the grassroots organization Floridians for E-Verify Now was just one vote away from placing on the 2018 ballot a state constitutional amendment that would have required the state legislature to mandate E-Verify for employers. But a coalition led by a billionaire GOP contributor waged a campaign of misinformation and outright lies that persuaded the Florida Constitutional Revision Commission to deny the measure.
Three California cities in Orange County, Newport Beach, Orange, and Westminster, voted last week to join the Trump Administration's effort to overturn California laws that block or interfere with federal immigration enforcement.

He is a former US Democrat congressman who represented Iowa’s 1st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 1973 to 1977.
He sat on the House Judiciary Committee that decided the fate of Richard Nixon.
He was outspoken saying that Nixon was a crook and a disgrace to politics and the nation and should be impeached.
He and the Clintons were close friends and very politically intertwined for many years.
Ed Mezvinsky had an affair with NBC News reporter Marjorie Sue Margolies and later married her after his wife divorced him.
In 1993, the new wife Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky left NBC and became an elected Democrat member in the US Congress. She cast the deciding vote that got President Bill Clinton’s controversial tax package through the House of Representatives.
In March 2001, Ed Mezvinsky was indicted and later pleaded guilty to 31 of 69 counts of bank fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud.
He embezzled more than $10 million dollars from people via both a Ponzi scheme and the notorious Nigerian e-mail scams.
He was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years in federal prison.
After serving less than five years, he was released in April 2008 and remains on federal probation.
To this day, he still owes $9.4 million in court ordered (but unpaid) restitution to his victims.

This Earth Day Resolve to Tell Your Members of Congress that Immigration is an Environmental Issue
Dear activist,
I recently met with the staff of two of my three representatives here in Virginia. I'd like to briefly describe my experience with the hope that it might inspire you to pursue a similar conversation with your own representatives. On this Earth Day, the clear ecological arguments for limiting immigration into the U.S. continue to be sidelined, or worse ignored, by those elected to represent us in Congress. For those of us who understand that the health of our communities and the economy is dependent upon the health of the environment, it's imperative that we continue to communicate this message to our fellow Americans as well as our Congressional representatives and their staff. Unfortunately, my recent experience suggested that the staff of the two Democratic offices I visited may not have much education in environmental sustainability. Do you think yours do?
CAVEAT: In those discussions with the staffs, I was speaking as a private citizen and not officially representing NumbersUSA. This allowed me talk about a broad range of my sustainability concerns. NumbersUSA, on the other hand, is a single-issue organization that deals with only the immigration part of environmental and population concerns. In advance of each meeting, I submitted a few questions to serve as an agenda:
(1) Why does it appear that [Congressman/Senator] considers aggregate economic growth (as measured by GDP) to be an unmitigated good? He appears to be using this to broadly support his position on immigration -- perhaps also viewing all immigration as an unmitigated good. I'd like to hear what you think, and whether you've considered the concept of a steady state economy (like that advocated by the organization CASSE) which doesn't have an underlying dependency on Ponzi demography.
(2) Assuming you are aware of America's rate of population growth, and assuming that you believe this continued population growth is acceptable, can you let me know why? How long do you believe we can sustain such growth? We are already facing undesirable consequences of such unsustainable population growth (e.g. biodiversity loss due to habitat loss/fragmentation, continued increases in GHG emissions contributing to further global climate disruption, wage suppression & increasing income/wealth inequality, dilution of democracy, etc.) Do you disagree with the 1972 Rockefeller Commission's recommendation that we pursue U.S. population stabilization? And more broadly, do you disagree with pursuing global population stabilization? If so, why?
(3) Are you aware that immigration (primarily legal immigration) is already the largest driver of continued population growth in the U.S.? And that recent projections from Pew Research Center show that under existing policies immigration is projected to account for 88% of all population growth -- over 100 million more people -- between 2015 and 2065? To be clear, I value immigration and have no issue with immigrants. I have an issue with this amount of rapid population growth which has proven to be an unsustainable net harm in its impact to the country and the planet, no matter the source (i.e. births or immigration). Why is your office not leading on openly discussing this in Congress and with your constituents? We can't grow forever. From my congressman's staff I heard that more immigration "is what businesses are telling us they need." In other words, businesses are telling Congress that they "need" more people -- more workers and more consumers to purchase their goods and services -- and Congress is prioritizing that "need" above all else. I responded by telling her this is the same thing we hear from the Cato Institute and the Chamber of Commerce! The staff member of one of my Senators, whose responsibilities include environmental and energy policy, was less familiar with immigration policy and the consequences of unsustainable population growth generally. I informed him about the Rockefeller Commission as well as the President's Council on Sustainable Development, whose recommendations included population stabilization, and explained that GDP was never intended to measure the health of the economy but simply the size of the economy. I also requested that he share my questions with his colleague who covers immigration policy for the Senator. Please consider making your voice heard by contacting your Congressional representatives, and feel free to leverage the questions I shared if you'd like. As Puerto Rico braces for another potentially brutal hurricane season, the FCC is planning to disconnect hundreds of thousands of people who rely on the Lifeline program for phone and internet access. Tell the FCC to stop the Lifeline rollback.
Lifeline provides a modest $9.25 monthly subsidy so that millions of people living below the poverty line can connect to vital communications services. But under Chairman Ajit Pai’s leadership, the FCC has proposed a heartless plan to dismantle the program.
The plan to gut Lifeline would cut off hundreds of thousands of people living in hurricane-stricken areas like Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.1 Lifeline is designed to ensure that low-income families are connected to emergency services.2 More than 500,000 households subscribe to Lifeline in Puerto Rico. If the FCC implements Pai’s cruel proposal, 75 percent of Lifeline recipients on the island could find themselves disconnected from lifesaving help when every moment counts.3 To disconnect people still struggling to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Maria would be unconscionable. Tell the FCC to ditch its plan and leave Lifeline alone. As Puerto Ricans anxiously await the 2018 hurricane season they need reassurance they’ll continue to have affordable access to communications services — and the ability to connect with emergency responders and loved ones if another hurricane strikes. Take action now to support Puerto Rico.

Over the weekend, The Guardian published an interview in which legendary country star Shania Twain, a Canadian, said that if she would have been allowed to vote in the 2016 election, she would have happily voted for President Donald J. Trump. Twain opined, “I would have voted for him because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest. Do you want straight or polite? Not that you shouldn’t be able to have both. If I were voting, I just don’t want b*llshit. I would have voted for a feeling that it was transparent. And politics has a reputation of not being that, right?” She really got to the heart of why many Americans who were tired of “business as usual” stood behind Trump. Of course, Twain was attacked for her perspective, but it happened at rapid speed. By Sunday afternoon, the blowback was so severe on Twitter for simply having the nerve to say she would have supported Trump, that Twain was forced to back peddle, probably at the insistence of her business team. Clearly, Twain was speaking her mind and is trying desperately to avoid a boycott of her North American tour. Twain released her fifth album last year after a 15-year hiatus and her tour starts next month. Sadly, Twain wrote on Twitter: I would like to apologize to anybody I have offended in a recent interview with the Guardian relating to the American President. The question caught me off guard. As a Canadian, I regret answering this unexpected question without giving my response more context. I am passionately against discrimination of any kind and hope it’s clear from the choices I have made, and the people I stand with, that I do not hold any common moral beliefs with the current President. I was trying to explain, in response to a question about the election, that my limited understanding was that the President talked to a portion of America like an accessible person they could relate to, as he was NOT a politician. My answer was awkward, but certainly should not be taken as representative of my values nor does it mean I endorse him. I make music to bring people together. My path will always be one of inclusivity, as my history shows. Of course, Twain is a Canadian citizen so she couldn’t vote for Trump. After all, we know it’s only Democrats who would commit voter fraud. This is just another reminder of how dangerous the left has become, as anyone who dares stray from liberal orthodoxy will immediately suffer serious consequences. The System is Dying: Step Out All You Lightwarriors!
These are exhilarating times to be alive! The controlling system that has limited humanity for so long is beginning to die. The signs are all around, while the powers-that-be struggle to cobble it all together. We need to now begin to shed the skin of the old reality in order to emerge fully into the New Paradigm.
But this is not about fighting the old. There’s no need. We simply have to live the New Paradigm here and now, develop new ways of living and being, then the old system will simply crumble away.
What practical steps can people take to accelerate the shift?
The tide is turning
Even the most hardened New Paradigm skeptic can surely see the old capitalistic system is ready to capitulate. It is fatally flawed, because its very foundation stone is based on ever-increasing consumption; money is debt, and for the money supply to increase, the level of global debt has to increase. And this can only be done by borrowing from tomorrow’s resources today. That’s why we’ve seen the debacle we’re witnessing now in the EU – countries that were once more self-sustaining, abandoning their more frugal ways, in search of the low-interest, have-it-today-pay-tomorrow economy.
But surely, as you peel back the veils from your awakening eyes, you can see the system bursting at the seams all around you? It has a while yet to go. The powers-that-be will keep sticking fingers and thumbs in the dyke whilst a majority still acquiesce to the old system. But the waters of change are building behind it, sooner or later, the dyke will crumble. It’s all just a question of time.
Two ways in which this can now go…
In my book 5GATEWAYS, I share a view as to how the movement into the New Paradigm can go, based on the trends in the shifts of consciousness currently going on. Everything is interconnected of course, we know that; which means that as Gaia shifts her consciousness into the Higher Paradigm, anything of the old inequitable and unjust consciousness will break apart. That may seem a little esoteric to some, but it is these fundamental shifts in the underlying field that are precipitating the current uncertainty.
Basically, as I see it, the situation moving forwards can go one of two ways…
Either (1) enough people venture inwards now, process their karma and become as one again with the higher vibrations of our planetary system, in which case, the transition will be a relatively smooth one; or (2) if too many resist the consciousness shift, it will create growing tension, with a much more chaotic and turbulent transition. What will it be? The smooth or more turbulent option? That all depends on us.
Whether knowingly or not, whether generally seen or not, evolving people hold the key. As your consciousness expands, so you influence the mainstream, through the field. Others may not even understand why they begin to feel what they feel, where did it come from? They simply feel veils falling away and begin looking at life differently. It’ll be a while before they have the answers, but the questions begin flooding in – questioning the old way of living and doing things, just as in Greece right now.
A system within a system
The system is on the ropes. But there’s no need for any kind of knock out punch. That would be to waste energy – it will fall over all by itself. What’s needed, is more of what’s going on behind the scenes anyway – ordinary people everywhere to begin living and acting differently – to be the change.
We have the classic example of Iceland to consider: they were ejected from the international monetary system during the last credit crunch in 2008. But instead of rolling over and taking the exorbitant IMF loans to rebuild, they kicked them out all together, locked up some of the more disreputable bankers, elected a government of the people and then set about becoming much more self-sustaining.
And in Greece right now, beyond the headline news of rioting in Athens, a quiet revolution is happening in the back waters. This is from the UK’s Guardian newspaper…

Actually this shift to new ways of living and being is springing up in pockets all around the world. The rapid rise of the awe inspiring Transition Towns Movement is exemplary.
Let’s remind ourselves, it’s crucial that we take this smoother option of a more gentle transition, so the world doesn’t literally tear itself apart, due to the increasing resistant tension. It requires lightwarriors to step up and step out everywhere. And to do what?
It has to begin with a shift in your own consciousness – that’s the only way true and lasting outer change can ever happen. So that’s number one on the list.

This Issue: New ruling will force the Administration to accept new DACA amnesty applications, unless it can convince the Court otherwise over next 90 days

A federal judge in the District of Columbia ordered the Trump Administration to begin accepting new DACA applications despite the Administration's decision to wind down the executive amnesty last fall. Federal Judge John Bates ruled that the Trump Administration didn't provide adequate justification for ending DACA, calling the program's termination "arbitrary and capricious." Judge Bates stayed his own decision for 90 days to allow the Trump Administration time to resubmit its justification for ending the DACA amnesty. The Trump Administration announced an end to the DACA amnesty on Sept. 5 of last year. The Administration immediately stopped accepting new DACA amnesty applications and allowed any existing DACA recipients whose DACA status was set to expire before March 5 of this year to submit a renewal application by Oct. 5, 2017. A number of lawsuits were filed against the Administration for ending the program, and federal judges in California and New York ordered the Administration to restart the processing of renewal applications back in January (but didn't open up new applications). Over the first three months of 2018, the Trump Administration has approved more than 55,000 DACA renewal applications. You can read more on the Judge's decision here.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR DACA?
This week's decision doesn't mean much in the short term since Judge Bates stayed his own order for 90 days. The stay gives the Department of Justice time to respond to his chief concern which is that the Administration didn't adequately explain why it believes the DACA amnesty is illegal. As these rulings mount up, it further increases the likelihood that the Supreme Court will get involved this fall, especially since it's increasingly unlikely that Congress will act on DACA before then. The reinstatement of DACA renewals, alone, has lifted much of the false "urgency" that Pres. Trump had placed on Congress last fall to pass some sort of a permanent DACA amnesty. HOUSE AVOIDING DACA The House has yet to take up the DACA amnesty issue, despite threats from some pro-amnesty Republicans to force a vote on the issue. Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Calif.), who has a NumbersUSA career D-grade, has introduced a House Resolution that would force a vote on Rep. Bob Goodlatte's (R-Va.) Securing America's Future Act (H.R. 4760), while also forcing votes on the DREAM Act and several other no-strings amnesty proposals. Only the one getting the most votes would be sent to the Senate, and Rep. Denham hopes it would be a no-strings amnesty. More than 50 House Republicans have signed on to Rep. Denham's Resolution, plus every House Democrat, but House Leadership has indicated they won't bring the Resolution to the floor for a vote. However, there are enough supporters that they could force a vote by filing a Discharge Petition. Rep. Denham has said he won't file one...for now. For those of you that live in one of the GOP-held districts whose U.S. Representative has supported Rep. Denham's efforts, we've posted action items on your Action Board.

New polling of American Catholics, Evangelicals and Protestants who are likely to vote in this fall's mid-term elections once again shows the majority of them have immigration views dramatically at odds with their leaders. His Tweet commented on the school's namesake Marjory Stoneman Douglas' work to protect the Everglades in South Florida. French House Passes New Immigration Bill to Bolster Enforcement Efforts

The French National Assembly passed a bill over the weekend that shortens application deadlines for asylum-seekers and doubles the current detention timeline for failed asylum-seekers awaiting deportation. Pres. Emmanuel Macron's centrist party says the law will speed up the asylum claims process.
A recent report by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) reveals that the rising level of education among new immigrants in the U.S. has done very little to relieve increasing poverty levels for new arrivals. The report indicates that in 2017 the number of new immigrants living in households on food stamps grew from 4%in 2007 to 13% in 2017 -- three times more than a decade before.

Most of you reading this article right now probably do your best to live a green and eco-friendly lifestyle. You likely buy local, organic and regenerative food when possible and use chemical-free cosmetics, personal care products and household cleaners. You may even recycle and drive an electric vehicle. These actions are commendable and bode well for our planet’s future.
But what about your burial? Conventional burials (including cremation) are characterized by ground- and water-polluting chemicals, man-made greenhouse gas emissions and energy-intensive practices including the vast deforestation to harvest wood for making caskets. The featured film, “Eco-Death Takeover: Changing the Funeral Industry,” reveals just how taxing the “funeral industrial complex” is on our environment and why we should consider eco-friendlier alternatives such as green or natural burials.
In Western culture, the concept of death is rather taboo. Though an inevitable fate for all of us, death itself is rarely discussed, let alone the practices and cultural traditions that follow the passing of a loved one. This could be why you’ve never heard of or thought about the environmentally damaging processes that occur with conventional burials in America.
The film was made by The Order of the Good Death, an organization founded by mortician and funeral homeowner Caitlin Doughty. Doughty, an advocate for green burials, is the author of two books, “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory”1 and “From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death.”2
Embalming Our Dead With Formaldehyde
The film starts out talking about what happens to our corpse after we die — a squeamish-like topic unfit for those with a weak stomach, but an important (and relevant) subject nonetheless. Naturally, our bodies decay when we die. It’s inevitable. Yet, due to our cultural traditions, the funeral industry goes to great lengths to delay this natural process, pumping the circulatory system and body cavity with a carcinogenic cocktail of preservative chemicals called embalming fluid.
The main ingredient in embalming fluid is formaldehyde,3 a hazardous substance linked to cancer and irritation of the eyes, nose and throat.
Formaldehyde was discovered in 1867 by chemist August Wilhelm von Hofmann.4 The chemical replaced the use of arsenic in the 20th century and became the primary ingredient for embalming corpses. Though highly toxic to humans, formaldehyde is the most popular chemical preservative among embalmers due to its effectiveness.
Debbie Dodge, president of the Dodge Company in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which markets embalming fluid to funeral homes, told The New York Times,5 “Formaldehyde is the perfect product for fixation and short-term preservation. Formaldehyde will firm up the body tissue more than any of the nonformaldehyde products out there.”
Formaldehyde exposure in the workplace is most common among embalmers, dentists, pathologists, veterinarians and those working in the clothing industry or furniture factories. For embalmers, one of the main routes of exposure is inhalation, meaning effective ventilation is key to protecting the health of embalmers. Formaldehyde levels during embalming can reach up to 4 parts per million (ppm); 0.5 ppm is the level at which humans begin to suffer side-effects.6
Delaying the Inevitable
In the U.S., 800,000 gallons of formaldehyde is dumped into the soil each year. How did we get to a place of dumping such vast amounts of chemicals into the Earth to preserve a body that’s still going to decompose? The process of embalming was first developed in the late 1800s as a means to preserve the body for scientific study. It later became popular in the funeral industry as demand increased to display the body of the deceased.
The practice grew more popular during the Civil War as embalming was used to preserve the bodies of deceased military men — some of whom traveled great distances by train or horse and buggy — to return home for their burials. Attempts to preserve the body do not stop with embalming.
Humans are placed in a modern casket usually made from wood, metal or a combination of both. The casket is then placed inside a burial vault or grave liner designed to prevent the Earth from sinking in around the grave — in other words, a casket for your casket.
This process is not only costly (averaging $9,000 to $11,000 per funeral in the U.S.), but also takes a toll on the environment. Each year, an estimated 4 million acres of forests are cleared to make nondegradable wooden caskets in addition to 115 million tons of steel and 2.3 billion tons of concrete.7 All of this is done in an effort to delay a process that’s inevitable — natural decomposition. Interestingly, the U.S. and Canada are the only nations where embalming is widely practiced.
Crematories: Raining Formaldehyde
By now you may be wondering about cremation. It cuts back on a lot of the resources required by a conventional burial, so isn’t it more eco-friendly? Yes and no, says Doughty, adding that direct cremation or cremation done without visitation or embalming is less costly and has its eco-friendly perks, i.e., no embalming and no casket. But where there’s a crematory, there’s fire, and where there’s fire, there’s smoke, she says, adding:
“In the case of a crematory, that smoke can contain a lot of harmful substances including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrochloric acid, sulphur dioxide, dioxin and carcinogens polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans.”
Another health and environmental concern linked to crematories is the mercury vapor dispersed into the air from a corpse with amalgam dental fillings. The chemical pollution is even worse with corpses embalmed with formaldehyde. Similar to mercury, vaporized formaldehyde remains suspended in the atmosphere until it bonds with water and rains back down on the Earth. Clearly, there must be better ways to bury our dead.
Measures are being taken to make cremation less destructive on our environment. These include pollution filters, which reduce air pollution but do not eliminate it. Some crematories are reusing the massive amount of energy required to cremate bodies to heat homes, public buildings and even swimming pools. But as the film notes, it’s still “putting a Band-Aid on an inherently flawed process.”
Green Alternatives to Conventional Burials
So, what can be done to make the traditions and processes surrounding death more eco-friendly and less toxic? The solution may lie in a process called alkaline hydrolysis, also referred to as aquamation, water cremation or flameless cremation. For decades, alkaline hydrolysis has been used in medical schools and for livestock and pets. It uses mainly water to accelerate the natural decomposition process of a corpse, dissolving the tissue and reducing it to soft bone fragments.
This is accomplished by placing a corpse, sometimes dressed in a biodegradable shroud, into a pressurized steel container filled with 95 percent water and 5 percent potassium. Over a two to three-hour period, the alkaline pressure and heated solutions circulate around the corpse, mimicking the chemical decomposition process the body undergoes when buried.
The remaining bone fragments are pulverized and given to loved ones, while the liquid broth left behind — a neutralized mixture of amino acids, peptides, sugars and salts — can either be repurposed into fertilizer or safely discarded.
Aquamation Versus Flame-Based Cremation
Compared to cremation, aquamation reduces the carbon footprint by more than 75 percent, while utilizing one-eighth the amount of energy, according to the Funeral Consumers Alliance. With aquamation, mercury vapors are contained and recycled instead of vaporized.8
Also, because corpses aren’t being incinerated at such high heat — upward of 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit — aquamation or flameless cremation results in fewer greenhouse gas and carbon dioxide emissions, rendering chemical emissions almost nonexistent, says Doughty.
But what about all the water used for aquamation? The process doesn’t require as much as you might think. The amount of water used to reduce the body to soft tissue and flush out the alkaline hydrolysis machine is equivalent to less than three days’ worth of water used by the average American, according to the film. Is aquamation the future of body disposal? Maybe. But it has to clear the legal hurdle first.
Aquamation or flameless cremation is currently legal in only 14 states, including California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Wyoming. And, while legal in these states, alkaline hydrolysis is only permitted for the disposal of human remains in four states, meaning the others allow it for pets only.9
Alkaline Hydrolysis: The Next Step in Death Technology?
So, what is the case against aquamation? To put it plainly, some people are disgusted or unnerved by the idea of dissolving themselves or their loved ones’ body in an alkaline hydrolysis machine and flushing the remnants down the drain. Some may find it disrespectful to the dead. However, as Doughty points out, water cremation seems far less violent than burning a corpse in an incinerator.
Philosopher and alternative funeral advocate Phil Olson agrees, telling The Atlantic, “Burning grandma in fire seems to be violent. In contrast, green cremation is ‘putting grandma in a warm bath.’” Alkaline hydrolysis isn’t perfect. But it seems to be cheaper and less destructive to the environment.
Natural Burials: Letting Nature Do Its Thing
Other green burial alternatives include natural burials. Natural or green burials are the simplest way to put a corpse in the earth and let nature take over with little to no environmental impact, according to the film. This is achieved by placing a corpse, either wrapped in a biodegradable shroud made of cotton or unbleached bamboo, into a casket made of biodegradable materials such as seagrass or willow.
The casket is then placed in a shallow grave measuring three to 4 feet deep. Once buried, nature takes over, allowing bacteria and insects in the soil to naturally break down the body and casket over time. Can natural burials lead to water and soil pollution? Not likely, says Doughty.
A study published by the Pan American Journal of Public Health found that pathogens don’t survive very long in a dead body or the soil around it because a corpse buried in a shallow grave is exposed to oxygen more quickly, which accelerates the decomposition process 10
During decomposition, the body may heat up to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, killing most, if not all, pathogens present at death. Soil and water contamination has been observed, however, in conventional cemeteries as a result of the toxic chemicals used in the embalming process.11 The most significant difference between a conventional burial and a natural or green burial is the impact it has on our environment.
There are ways to make conventional burials greener with methods such as eco-friendly embalming and Earth-friendly caskets, but it’s all an attempt to make a destructive process a little bit better, says Doughty. More people are opening their minds to greener alternatives when it comes to death. For example, the Bradshaw Celebration of Life Center in Minnesota reports that when given the choice, 80 percent of people prefer a green cremation.12
If you really think about it, green burials are the ultimate way to give back to the Earth, which has supported us our entire lives, says Doughty, adding: “You eat plants and animals in life, and in death, they get to eat you.” In other words, with a green burial, the circle of life comes full circle at death.
